A tournament — a competition where many players or teams keep playing rounds until one is left. The word has led two lives. The old one is medieval: a tourney was the event where knights on fought each other with lances for sport, and you meet that meaning in history books, fantasy novels and films. The new one is modern and casual: in American sports talk and especially in online gaming, tourney is simply the short, friendly of tournament — "we're running a tourney on Saturday", "who's in the tourney?". Between those two, there is not much middle ground. A serious sports report would write tournament; a friend inviting you to a weekend chess or Overwatch event might well write tourney. There is also a rare old verb, to tourney, meaning to take part in one, but you will only find it in old writing.
組成From Anglo-Norman turnei, from Old French tornei, from tornoier 'to joust, to tilt' — built on the idea of turning, because the horses wheeled around to charge again. Tournament comes from the very same French root, which is why the modern short form lands back on the older word.
