Touchingly describes doing something in a way that makes other people feel a soft, warm sadness — pity, sympathy, tenderness, the feeling that comes just before tears. 'He spoke touchingly about his mother.' 'The letter was touchingly honest.' The emotion it points to is gentle, never violent: not grief that breaks you, but the kind that makes your chest feel full. Very often what makes something touching is that it is small, or plain, or a bit clumsy — a child's badly drawn card, an old man still tending his wife's garden. So writers reach for touchingly when innocence or effort shows through. There is a warning inside the word, though. Because the feeling is soft, 'touchingly' can carry a faint note of looking down from above — 'she touchingly believed he would come back' means she was sweet, and she was wrong. Whether it is pure warmth or gentle pity depends entirely on the sentence around it. The word is a little literary; you meet it in reviews, obituaries and novels more than in talk. In speech people usually just say 'it was really touching'.
