A ton can be pictured as the weight you cannot argue with — about a thousand , roughly a small car. No person lifts it, no one carries it upstairs; it has to be moved by machine. Because it sits at the edge of what a body can even imagine handling, English keeps reaching for it whenever something feels too much: too heavy to lift, too many to count, too sudden to absorb.
