Togolese is the word for anything belonging to Togo, the West African country. It works two ways. As an adjective: the Togolese government, Togolese food, a Togolese passport. As a noun for the people: a Togolese, and — this is the part that catches students — the plural is also Togolese, with no -s. So you say three Togolese and many Togolese, exactly as with Chinese and Japanese. For the whole population, say the Togolese. Like all nationality words in English it keeps its capital letter wherever it stands in the sentence. It is a plain, neutral word, at home in news reports and ordinary talk alike. Note it is not a language name: people in Togo speak French, Ewe, Kabiye and others, so "he speaks Togolese" is not a sentence English speakers would accept.
