- 1a/ˌpɔːrtʃəˈɡiz/ · /ˌpɔːtʃəˈɡiːz/from Portugal葡萄牙的
Belonging to Portugal or coming from it — its people, its language, its food, its buildings, or anything else that is part of that country.
「Portuguese」是形容詞,指「跟葡萄牙有關的」。人、語言、食物、音樂、建築都可以用。用法很單純,直接放在名詞前面。像是 Portuguese bread、a Portuguese singer。開頭一定大寫。因為它是從國名 Portugal 長出來的字。它不一定表示「在葡萄牙做的」。在別的地方做出葡萄牙的做法,也可以說 Portuguese。講語言的時候範圍更大。巴西和好幾個非洲國家也說葡萄牙語。所以 Portuguese 講語言時,不等於在講葡萄牙這個國家。
示範例句 · Example
Mei's neighbour cooked a Portuguese soup with beans and cabbage.
中文翻譯美的鄰居煮了一道有豆子和高麗菜的葡萄牙湯。
Portuguese carries three things at once: the country, the people in it, and the language they speak. Put it straight in front of a noun — Portuguese bread, a Portuguese singer, Portuguese spelling. It keeps its capital letter, because it is built on the country name Portugal. It does not only mean 'made in Portugal'. Something cooked or built in that country's way, somewhere else, can be Portuguese too. And when it points at the language, it reaches much further than the country, because Brazil and several African countries speak Portuguese as well.

As a language name, Portuguese is uncountable: you say 'I speak Portuguese', never 'a Portuguese' or 'Portugueses'. It keeps its capital letter. To say which language something is in, English uses in: written in Portuguese, say it in Portuguese. Notice how far the word reaches. Far more people speak Portuguese in Brazil than in Portugal, so someone who speaks Portuguese is often not from Portugal at all, and the two big varieties, European and Brazilian, sound quite different from each other.
