Togo is a country in West Africa, sitting between Ghana on one side and Benin on the other. It is long and very narrow — a thin strip running from the Atlantic coast up into the interior. The capital is Lomé, on the coast. It was a German colony, then split between Britain and France, and today the main official language is French, which surprises students who expect English because the neighbours speak it. As a proper noun it takes no article: say Togo, never the Togo. The people and the adjective are . English speakers often confuse it with Tonga, which is a completely different place — islands in the Pacific.
組成Named after the town Togoville, from the Ewe language: to "to pound" + go "shore" — a name from the lakeside, which the Germans then used for the whole territory.
