Land that is covered with trees, especially trees that are being grown to be cut down and sold as wood. It is not a wild forest you go walking in for fun — the word carries the sense of trees as a crop, something owned and counted. A paper company or a family might own timberland the way a farmer owns a field. It is mostly an American word, and it is heard most often in business, law, and news: how many acres of timberland a company holds, or who bought it. Americans usually say it as one uncountable mass — 'thousands of acres of timberland' — rather than 'a timberland'. In Britain people would more likely say woodland, which does not have the money in it. Note also that Timberland with a capital T is a well-known boot brand, and for many students that is the only meaning they have met.
組成timber (trees grown to be cut into wood) + land. It is an old joining — Old English already had timberland — so the two halves have been stuck together for over a thousand years.
