Farmland is land used for farming — fields for rice or wheat, or grass for cows and sheep. It is not the house, not a city, and not wild forest. News stories about “losing farmland” mean this ground is being turned into roads or buildings. The word does not pick out one small field; it is farming land in a broad sense. You grow things on farmland; you do not live “in” it.
