Grassland is a large stretch of land where wild grass is the main thing that grows — not forest, not desert, not a farm field of wheat, and not the short tidy grass of a park lawn. Think of open country: prairie, savanna, steppe. Animals that eat grass live there. People use the word in geography and nature talk; it sounds a little like a textbook, but it is the normal word for that kind of place.

Though actually, “grassland” covers quite different places — wet or dry, tall grass or short — so scientists sometimes split it into types. For a learner, the picture “wide land of wild grass” is honest enough.
