A tight-knit group is one where the people are closely joined to each other — they know each other well, they care about each other, and they help each other. It is used about families, small towns, teams, work groups, and communities of people who share something. The word comes from : when wool is knitted tightly, the loops hold each other and the cloth does not come apart. That is the picture — people holding on to each other. It is a warm word. When somebody says 'a tight-knit family', they mean it as praise. But listen for the second half of what people say, because the same closeness can shut others out: a tight-knit community is lovely if you belong to it, and hard to enter if you do not, and speakers often use the word exactly when they want to say both things at once ('It's a tight-knit village — everyone helps you, but everyone knows your business'). You will also see it written 'tightly knit', which means the same thing.

組成tight (closely, with nothing loose between) + knit (joined together the way wool is knitted into cloth). So: 'knitted together tightly' — the loops hold each other.
