A product made to go with a film, TV show, or game that is coming out — the toy, the book of the story, the T-shirt, the special cup at the burger shop. The point of a tie-in is not that it exists on its own but that it borrows the attention the big thing is already getting, and sells on the back of it. It is a noun, written with a , and it very often sits in front of another noun: a tie-in novel, a tie-in game, a tie-in deal. It also has a second, looser use meaning simply a connection between two things — "there's a tie-in with the case we saw last year" — but the film-and-toy sense is far more common. Note that the two-word verb "tie in" (no ) is different: it means to fit or connect with something, as in "that ties in with what she told us".
