Thatcherism is the name for the whole set of ideas that Margaret Thatcher's government followed when she led Britain from 1979 to 1990. The main ideas: let the free market decide prices and wages, sell government-owned companies to private owners, cut taxes, control the money supply to stop prices rising, weaken the power of trade unions, and expect people to look after themselves rather than lean on the state. She famously said there is no such thing as society, only individuals and families — that line captures the spirit of it. The word is not neutral. People who admired her use it for a brave cure that saved a weak economy; people who hated her use it for a cold policy that closed the coal mines and threw whole towns out of work. So the same word can sound like praise or like an accusation, and you have to read the writer's other words to know which. It has also stretched beyond Britain. Writers now use Thatcherism for any government anywhere that follows the same free-market, small-state line, even decades later and on the other side of the world. Note the capital T: it stays capital because it comes from a person's name. The -ism ending is the ordinary one for a political or philosophical system, the same as in socialism or capitalism.
