Term-time is the part of the year when school is actually running — lessons on, students in the building — as opposed to the holidays in between. British schools and universities cut the year into terms (often three: autumn, spring, summer), so term-time is all of those terms taken together, seen from outside.
Term-time is Term-time 是 when school is actually running學校真的在上課 the part of the year的那段時間 — lessons on課在進行、 students in the building學生在校舍裡 — as opposed to相對於 the holidays in between中間穿插的假期。 British schools and universities英國的中小學和大學 cut the year into把一年切成幾個 terms terms 學期 often three常常是三個: autumn, spring, summer秋、春、夏 so所以 term-time term-time is是 all of those terms那些學期全部 taken together合起來、 seen from outside從外面看的樣子。
You use it mostly to say what may or may not happen during it: "You can't take a child out of school in term-time", "She works part-time in term-time and full-time in the summer", "term-time accommodation". That last one shows the adjective use, which is very common — a term-time job, a term-time address, term-time only hours, meaning work that stops when the school stops, which is how many school kitchen and office staff are employed.
You你 use it mostly主要用它 to say來說 during it這段期間 what may or may not happen可以發生什麼、不可以發生什麼: "You can't take a child out of school in term-time"你不能在學期中把小孩帶離學校、 "She works part-time in term-time and full-time in the summer"她學期中做兼職、夏天做全職、 "term-time accommodation"學期中的住宿。 That last one最後那一個 shows顯示的是 the adjective use形容詞用法 which is very common非常常見 — a term-time job學期中的工作、 a term-time address學期中的地址、 term-time only hours只在學期中的工時 meaning意思是 that stops when the school stops學校一停就跟著停的 work工作 which is how many school kitchen and office staff are employed很多學校廚房和辦公室職員就是這樣受僱的。
This is a British and Commonwealth word. American schools talk about **the school year**, **during the school year**, or **the semester**, and an American reader may pause at term-time.
This這 is是 a British and Commonwealth word英國和大英國協的字。 American schools美國的學校 talk about說的是 the school year學年、 during the school year在學年期間 or或 the semester學期 and an American reader而美國讀者 at term-time看到 term-time may pause可能會停頓一下。
Written with a most often, sometimes as two words or one; all are seen.
most often最常 written with a hyphen寫成帶連字號 sometimes有時 as two words or one寫成兩個詞或連成一個字; all are seen三種都看得到。
組成term + time. Term here is a fixed stretch of time with a start and an end — the same term as in a president's term of office or the term of a loan — from Latin terminus, a boundary or end point. So term-time is simply "the time inside the school's set periods".
