Describing something that looks so good you really want it, even if you know you probably should not have it. That second half is what makes the word interesting: a tempting cake, a tempting offer, a tempting shortcut. There is usually a rule, a plan, or a bit of good sense that you would be breaking. Food is the commonest use — "that smells tempting" — but so are offers and ideas: "a tempting job offer", "a tempting price". A very common pattern is "It is tempting to...": "It's tempting to give up now." That one is gentle and often about a thought rather than a thing, and it usually leads to a "but": "It's tempting to blame the weather, but...". You can or strengthen it — "quite tempting", "very tempting", "how tempting!". As a one-word answer, "Tempting..." said slowly means "I want to say yes, and I might not". The opposite, useful to know, is "off-putting".
