Televangelism is the practice of preaching Christianity on television. A preacher buys air time, or runs a whole channel, and speaks to a huge audience at home instead of to a small room of people in a church. The word covers the whole activity — the programmes, the style of speaking, the money side of it. It is mostly an American thing, and it grew very big in the 1970s and 1980s. The word is almost always used with a cool or critical feeling: when people say televangelism, they are often thinking about the part where the preacher asks viewers to send money, and about the famous scandals where some of those preachers were caught lying or stealing. It is not a word a preacher would happily use about their own work. You will meet it in news writing and in discussions about religion and money, rarely in daily talk. Note that it names the practice, not a person — the person is a televangelist.
