Telegenic describes a person who looks good on television — not just good-looking in life, but good in the specific way the camera likes. This is the interesting part of the word, and worth telling your friends: the two things are not the same. Some very beautiful people go flat on screen, and some ordinary-looking people become warm and alive the moment the camera turns on. Telegenic is about that screen quality — the face reads well, the eyes stay alive, the person seems comfortable and easy to watch. Because of that, the word usually carries more than looks. When people call a politician telegenic, they mean the person comes across well on TV: relaxed, likeable, believable in a short interview. It is often used about politicians, news presenters, spokespeople, and anyone whose job needs public trust. There is a small edge to it too, and you should know it.
