teenager 指的是 13 到 19 歲的人，比 child 大，又還沒算 adult。這個字可以想成「名字裡帶著 -teen 的年紀」：thirteen、fourteen 一直到 nineteen，這幾個英文數字都有 teen，剛好就是這一段。所以 12 歲的小孩還不是 teenager，20 歲（twenty，沒有 teen）也已經走出這個字了；日常口語常直接說 teen。

You can picture the word hiding inside itself: the years whose English names end in -teen — thirteen, fourteen, all the way to nineteen. A teenager is simply a person living inside those years: too old to be handled as a child, not yet counted as an adult, standing in the doorway between the two.
