An adolescent is a young person in that in-between time, usually about 12 to 18: not a little child, not quite a grown adult. You can also use it as an adjective: adolescent behaviour, an adolescent boy. It is more formal than teenager, and a bit more ‘from a textbook or a clinic.’ Teenager points to the -teen numbers (thirteen to nineteen); adolescent points to the growing-up process, so a very young twelve-year-old might still be called an adolescent. In casual talk, teenager is what people say. Though actually, when an adult calls another adult’s behaviour adolescent, they mean it as a slight: ‘you are acting like a sulky teen.’ The noun is older in English than the adjective; the adjective became common later.
