A person who dislikes new machines — computers, smartphones, apps — and avoids using them, often because they feel afraid of them or simply do not want their life changed by them. Despite the '-phobe' ending, this is usually not a real medical fear. It is a light, half-joking label, and people very often use it about themselves: 'I'm a bit of a technophobe, can you set it up for me?' Said that way, it is a friendly way of asking for help and admitting you have not kept up. Said about someone else it can be gentle teasing, but it can also sting a little, because it hints they are old-fashioned or slow. It is usually aimed at older people, though not always — some young people proudly call themselves technophobes for choosing paper books and a simple phone. The opposite word is 'technophile', someone who loves new technology, but that one is much rarer in daily speech.

組成techno- + -phobe. 'Techno-' comes from Greek tekhne, skill or craft, and is the front piece of 'technology'. '-Phobe' comes from Greek phobos, fear, and marks the PERSON who fears something.
