Having tears in your eyes — crying a little, or just about to. "Her eyes were teary" means they were wet and shining, maybe one tear, maybe none yet. "I got a bit teary" means my feelings rose up and my eyes filled. Compared with tearful, teary is softer, smaller, and much more everyday. Tearful sounds like a scene in a novel; teary sounds like something you would say to a friend. It also suits the small, warm, slightly embarrassing kind of crying — at a wedding, at a farewell, at an old photograph — more than deep grief. People often soften it further with a bit or a little: "I got a little teary." There is a common partner word too: teary-eyed, which means exactly the same thing and is used before or after the person ("a teary-eyed bride", "she stood there teary-eyed"). And teary can describe eyes that are simply watering — from cold wind, smoke, or cutting onions — with no feeling behind it at all.
