A small candle, short and wide, sitting in its own little metal cup — usually thin aluminium. It is the kind you buy in bags of fifty and use for atmosphere: on a restaurant table, in a glass lantern, in a paper bag along a path, under a small dish to keep something warm. The metal cup is the point, because the wax melts completely and would otherwise run everywhere. One burns for about three to four hours and is then thrown away. Also written tea light or tea-light. Some hotels now use battery ones that flicker, and people still call those tealights.
