1. 1

A small bag, usually thin paper, with tea leaves shut inside it. You put it in a cup, pour hot water on it, wait, and take it out — so you get tea without loose leaves floating in your drink. Most have a string and a little paper tag so you can lift the bag out easily; cheaper ones do not. Some are square, some are pyramid-shaped for better-quality leaf tea. You will see it written three ways — teabag, tea bag, tea-bag — and all are accepted; British writing tends to join it up, American writing tends to keep it apart. In Britain, where people drink a lot of tea, the word carries a small feeling of ordinary, everyday tea, as against loose leaf tea made properly in a pot. One warning: as a verb, "teabag" has a rude slang meaning in American and online English, so it is safest to keep to the noun.
