A taxpayer is a person or a company that pays tax to the government. In the plainest use it simply describes you: if you work and money comes out of your salary for tax, you are a taxpayer. But listen to how the word actually appears in the news, because it almost always carries a feeling. When a politician says 'this is taxpayers' money' or 'taxpayers will foot the bill', they are reminding you that the money came from ordinary working people, and usually they are angry about how it is being spent. So the word is a quiet argument as much as a description. You will also meet fixed phrases: 'the taxpayer' as a single group ('the taxpayer will pay for it'), 'taxpayer-funded' schools or hospitals, and 'hardworking taxpayers' — a phrase politicians love. It is a normal, neutral-looking word that people mostly reach for when they want to make a point.
