A tattooist is a person whose job is putting tattoos on other people's skin. It is the neutral, slightly formal British word — it is what you would write on a form or a shop licence. In everyday speech, especially in America and among younger people everywhere, most say 'tattoo artist', which carries more respect for the drawing skill, and inside the trade people simply say 'artist'. The place they work is a tattoo shop, a tattoo parlour, or a studio. Choosing between the words says something: 'tattooist' sounds like a trade, 'tattoo artist' sounds like an art. Both are correct and neither is rude.

組成tattoo + -ist, the ending that names the person who does something: art → artist, piano → pianist, science → scientist. The -ist ending came into English through Old French from Latin -ista, and before that from Greek -istes.
