Tanzania is a country in East Africa, on the Indian Ocean, with Kenya to the north and Mozambique to the south. It was formed in 1964 when two places joined: Tanganyika on the mainland and the island of Zanzibar. Two facts about its cities often confuse people. The official capital is Dodoma, inland, but most government offices and nearly all business are still in Dar es Salaam, the big port city on the coast — so Dar es Salaam is what people picture when they hear "Tanzania". Things Taiwanese students may already know without knowing they are Tanzanian: Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa; the Serengeti, the grassland where the great herds of wildebeest migrate in the wildlife films; and Swahili, the language, which gives English the word safari and the song words hakuna matata. The people are Tanzanians and the adjective is Tanzanian. Say it tan-zuh-NEE-uh, with the stress on the NEE.
