Tantalizing describes something that makes you want it, and want it more because you cannot quite have it. A tantalizing smell drifts from a kitchen you are not invited into. A tantalizing offer sounds wonderful but has a catch. A tantalizing clue points at the answer without giving it. Two common shades: with food and smells it means mouth-wateringly good; with ideas, hints, glimpses, and possibilities it means almost-but-not-quite. The second use is the more common one in writing — journalists love "a tantalizing glimpse of" and "a tantalizing prospect". It is a warm, slightly literary word, never rude. British spelling: tantalising.
組成tantalize (to keep something just out of reach) + -ing, the ending that turns a verb into a describing word for the thing causing the feeling. Behind it stands Tantalus, the Greek king who stood in water he could never drink, under fruit he could never reach.
