a tale of woe (one sad experience) · noun · B2
A story about sad or difficult things that happened to someone.
A tale can be pictured as a story that still has a inside it. Unlike the flatter word story, tale keeps the voice: someone is speaking, someone is listening, and the telling may stretch a little. That is why the word pulls in two directions at once — towards old stories and legends with a touch of magic, and towards 'well, that's his version of it'.
