1. 1

To tabulate is to take numbers or facts that are lying around loose and arrange them into a table — rows and columns — so that they line up and can be compared. The important part is not the drawing of lines on a page; it is the sorting. You are deciding what goes in each row, what goes in each column, and where each piece of information belongs. That is why the word often carries a feeling of careful, patient work: 'we tabulated the answers from all four hundred .' It is a formal word, at home in reports, research, and offices. In ordinary speech people say 'put it in a table', 'write it up in a table', 'make a chart of it'. In news about elections you often see 'the votes are still being tabulated' — meaning they are being counted and organised, and here the counting sense is strong. A related but different use: on an old typewriter, and now on a keyboard, the Tab key came from this word. Tab is short for 'tabulator' — the part that jumped the carriage across to the next column so you could type a table . That is why the key moves you sideways in steps.

    把資料列成表格、製成表;選舉新聞裡的 tabulate the votes 是「計票、統計票數」。鍵盤上的 Tab 鍵就是從這個字來的。

組成From Latin 'tabula' = a flat board or plank (things were written on boards), plus the verb ending '-ate' = to make or to do. So: to board it up, to lay it out on a flat surface in order. English also sees it as 'table' + '-ate'.
