Superannuated describes something — or someone — that is old and past its useful life. A superannuated computer still switches on but cannot run anything you need; a superannuated law is still written down but no longer fits how people live; superannuated equipment is waiting to be thrown away. Applied to a person, it means too old to go on doing the job, and it is usually said with a smile or a sting, not as a neutral fact: an old teacher joking that he is superannuated, or a writer being about a superannuated politician. Be careful with people — it can sound rude. The word is formal and rather old-fashioned itself, which is part of its charm; you meet it in books and in dry humour more than in conversation. There is a second, narrower use, mostly British and Australian, which is purely official: a superannuated worker is one who has been retired on a pension, especially because they reached a set age. In that use there is no insult at all — it just means 'retired with a pension', and it connects to the noun 'superannuation'.
