Superannuation is retirement money — a pension, especially the kind connected with a job. Both you and your employer put money in while you are working, and after you retire that money is paid back to you to live on. The word is formal and belongs to official English: contracts, , tax forms, government letters. It is used in Britain, but it is above all the everyday Australian and New Zealand word, where people it to 'super' and use it constantly — 'How much super have you got?', 'my super fund', 'they pay super on top of your wage'. In American English almost nobody says it; there it is a 401(k), a pension, or a retirement plan. The word can mean the system, the regular payments going in, or the sum of money itself, and the meaning is usually clear from the sentence. It is uncountable: superannuation, not 'a superannuation' and not 'superannuations'. If you ever work for an Australian company, this is the word on your , so it is worth knowing even though it looks long and rare.
組成superannuate (to retire someone because of age) + -ion (the noun ending). Behind it is Latin super (over) + annus (year) — going past the year limit, that is, past retirement age.
