    Suffolk is a county in England, on the east coast, north-east of London. It is a quiet, flat, farming place — wide fields, small old towns, a long coast, no big city at all. Ipswich is the largest town. English people picture Suffolk as gentle countryside, and it is closely tied to the painter John Constable, who grew up there in the early 1800s and painted its fields, rivers and huge skies. Because of him, one corner of Suffolk is even called 'Constable Country'.

    A few things worth knowing. Suffolk sits under Norfolk, and the two together are called East Anglia. The name is not fancy: it just means 'the south folk', the southern people of the old kingdom of East Anglia — Norfolk is the north folk. So the two counties are named as a pair, and once you see that, you never forget which is which.

    You will also meet the word attached to things from there: Suffolk sheep (a well-known breed with a black face), Suffolk Punch (a heavy work horse). In British talk, saying someone lives 'in Suffolk' quietly suggests a slow, rural, rather comfortable life.

組成Old English Sūþfolc = sūþ 'south' + folc 'folk, people' — 'the south people'. Straightforward English words, just very old spellings.
