A suckling is a very young baby or young animal that is still drinking its mother's milk — it has not started eating solid food yet. As a noun on its own, this is old and you will mostly meet it in the Bible or old writing ('babes and sucklings'). What you really need is its use before another noun, meaning 'still drinking milk': a suckling pig, a suckling lamb, a suckling calf. Suckling pig is by far the most common — a whole young pig, roasted, which is a special dish in Spain, the Philippines, southern China and many other places. The word also exists as a verb form of suckle. Suckle means to feed a baby with milk from the breast, and it works both ways round: the mother suckles the baby, and the baby suckles at the mother. So 'the were suckling' means they were drinking. Note the spelling and sound: suckle and suckling have no 'r'. This is a slightly formal, biological or literary word — for humans, ordinary people say 'breastfeeding' or 'nursing', not suckling.
組成suck + -ling. The ending -ling means a small or young one — the same ending in duckling (a young duck), gosling (a young goose), and nestling (a bird still in the nest). So a suckling is literally 'a little sucker', a small one that sucks.
