A section is a part of something bigger — a chapter of a law, a part of a form, a division of a report. A subsection is a part inside that part. So the order goes: the whole document, then sections, then subsections. In law this is very literal. A law might have Section 5, and inside Section 5 there is subsection (1), subsection (2), and so on. Lawyers say it out loud like 'section five, subsection two', and in writing you often just see '5(2)' with the number in brackets — the bracket number IS the subsection. Outside law, people use it more loosely for any smaller block inside a bigger block: a subsection of a report, a subsection of a website, a subsection of a survey. You will meet it a lot in academic writing and in official documents, and almost never in normal conversation — nobody says 'let me tell you about the subsection of my day'. It is a formal, written, organising word. One thing worth noticing: there is no fixed rule for how small a subsection is. It only means 'one level down from the section'. If that subsection is itself cut up, some documents then say sub-subsection, or more often paragraph or clause. So the word is about position, not size.
