A small underwater vehicle, usually built for science or deep-sea work, that carries people or instruments far down into the ocean. The important difference from a submarine: a submarine is large and can travel on its own for a long time, while a submersible is small, has limited power, and normally needs a mother ship on the surface to launch it, hold its supplies, and bring it home. News stories about exploring wrecks or deep-sea trenches almost always involve a submersible. Some carry a crew; some are unmanned and controlled from above. The same word is also an adjective meaning 'able to be put under water and still work' — a submersible pump sits down in a well, a submersible light goes in a pond, and shops label things this way. So context tells you whether you are looking at a vehicle or a description.
