Working on your mind below the level where you notice it. A subliminal message is one your eyes or ears take in without your conscious mind catching it — a picture flashed too fast to see properly, a word hidden under music. The idea became famous through advertising scare stories in the 1950s about single frames spliced into films, and the word still carries that slightly suspicious, manipulative smell: people say 'subliminal advertising', 'subliminal messages'. In looser everyday use it just means 'not fully conscious' — 'there was a subliminal hint of criticism in her voice' — meaning you felt it before you could say what it was. It is an adjective and normally sits before the noun; the adverb is 'subliminally'. Note that this is not the same as 'unconscious' in the Freudian sense; subliminal is about the signal being too weak or too fast to register, not about deep hidden parts of the mind.
組成sub- 'below' + limen 'threshold, doorstep' (Latin) + -al, the ending that makes an adjective. Literally 'below the threshold' — the doorway of awareness. English borrowed the whole idea from German unterschwellig, which means exactly the same thing piece for piece.
