Describing a person whose mind has gone blank — from shock, from tiredness, from drink, or from too much of something dull. The commonest use is astonishment: you are stupefied by news so strange that you simply stare. It is stronger and more literary than 'surprised', and a bit stronger than 'stunned' too, because it says your thinking has actually clouded over, not just paused. The second use is physical dullness: stupefied with heat, stupefied by lack of sleep, stupefied by hours of television. Here it means slow, foggy, not really present. Look for the phrases it lives in — 'stupefied by', 'stupefied with', and before a noun, 'a stupefied expression', 'a stupefied silence'. It belongs to careful writing more than to talk; a friend would say 'I was so out of it' or 'I couldn't believe it'.
