The Stuarts were the royal family that ruled Scotland from 1371, and then ruled England, Scotland and Ireland together from 1603, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England. Their time on the throne was broken in the middle: after a civil war, King Charles I was executed in 1649 and Britain had no king at all for eleven years, until the family came back in 1660.
