The Stuarts were the royal family that ruled Scotland from 1371, and then ruled England, Scotland and Ireland together from 1603, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England. Their time on the throne was broken in the middle: after a civil war, King Charles I was executed in 1649 and Britain had no king at all for eleven years, until the family came back in 1660. They finally ended in 1714, when Queen Anne died with no living child. So when a history book says 'the Stuart period' or 'Stuart England', it means roughly the 1600s — the century of civil war, of Shakespeare's later years, of the Great Fire of London. As a word, it works as a noun ('the last of the Stuarts') and as an adjective before another noun ('a Stuart king', 'Stuart architecture'). You will also meet the older Scottish spelling Stewart, and Mary, Queen of is often written Mary Stuart. Outside history, Stuart is simply a common British man's first name, and Stewart a common surname; the two uses are unrelated in daily life even though the words are the same.
