Strong-arm describes getting your way by force or by threats, especially when force was not needed at all. As an adjective it sits in front of a noun: strong-arm tactics, strong-arm methods, a strong-arm approach. As a verb it takes an object and usually to: they strong-armed him into signing, the government strong-armed the smaller company into a deal. The picture behind the word is somebody grabbing your arm and marching you where they want you to go. Notice that the force is often not real punching — most of the time it means heavy pressure, bullying, threatening to withdraw money or support. That is what makes it useful: it names the bullying that wears a suit. It appears constantly in news about and business, and it is always ; nobody describes their own behaviour as strong-arm. In older crime reporting, a strong-arm robbery meant one done with bare hands rather than a weapon.
