A storyteller is someone who tells stories out loud. The plainest use is the one children know: the person at bedtime, or the visitor at a school who sits down and holds a room of six-year-olds still for twenty minutes. In many cultures it is also a real job with a long history — someone who kept the old tales alive by speaking them, before or instead of writing them down. But here is where it gets more interesting, and this second use is very common. We use storyteller as high praise for anyone who is good at holding an audience with a story, whatever their actual medium. A novelist, a film director, a stand-up comedian, a journalist, even a grandfather at dinner can all be called a great storyteller. Notice what the praise is about: not beautiful sentences, not clever ideas, but the plainer power to make people want to know what happens next. Critics sometimes use it slightly against a writer for exactly that reason — "he is a wonderful storyteller" can quietly mean "the plot pulls you along, but do not look too hard at the writing." There is also a lighter, half-joking use with children: telling a child "don't be such a storyteller" is an old, gentle way of saying they are making things up — that is, lying. It sounds a bit dated now, and you are unlikely to need it, but you may meet it in older books.
