Someone who is stone-faced shows nothing on their face: no smile, no anger, no warmth. The picture is exact — a face like a stone statue, unmoving. It is used two ways. Sometimes it means a person is hiding what they feel on purpose: a stone-faced police officer, a stone-faced poker player, a judge listening stone-faced to the evidence. Here it suggests control and often a little . Other times it just means — a stone-faced clerk who will not help you. Compare it with 'stolid', which suggests the person genuinely feels little; 'stone-faced' more often suggests feeling is there but is being kept behind the face.
