1. 1

Stoical describes someone who keeps calm and does not complain while something painful or unpleasant is happening to them, or describes the behaviour itself: a stoical patient, a stoical silence, stoical about losing the money. It is an adjective only — the person is a stoic, and what they are is stoical. English also allows stoic as an adjective with the same meaning, and the two are in almost every sentence; stoical feels slightly more literary and is a little more common in British writing, while American writers reach for stoic. The word is somewhat formal and belongs more to writing than to daily talk — at a hospital bed people say 'she's being very brave' far more often than 'she's being very stoical'. As with stoic, the word describes the outside, not the inside: it says nothing about whether the person is suffering, only that they are not showing it, and it is often used with a touch of concern for exactly that reason.

    堅忍的、逆來順受的、不抱怨的。書面語氣,日常口語更常說 brave。「逆來順受」帶點被動接受的意味,stoical 則偏重「忍住不表現出來」。

組成stoic + -al. The ending -al turns a noun into an adjective, the way nature becomes natural and music becomes musical. Underneath, stoic goes back through Latin to the Greek Stoa Poikile, the painted porch in Athens where the philosopher Zeno taught.
