Stoically is the adverb: it describes HOW someone does something — calmly, without complaining, while the situation is hard. He bore the pain stoically. She stoically carried on working. Because it is an adverb, it attaches to a verb, and the verbs it goes with are usually verbs of enduring or continuing: bear, endure, put up with, wait, carry on, accept, sit, stand. That gives the word most of its flavour — you almost never hear stoically with a happy verb, because the whole point is that something bad is being taken quietly. It is a fairly formal, written word; in speech people say 'without complaining' or 'he just got on with it'. Position is flexible: 'he stoically refused' and 'he refused stoically' are both fine, and the version before the verb sounds a little more literary.
