    A stockyard is an open place with fences and pens where farm animals — cattle, sheep, pigs — are held for a while before they are sold or moved on. Again 'stock' means livestock, live animals. Usually the word appears as 'stockyards', plural, because it is a set of many pens side by side, not one square of ground. You find them next to livestock markets, railway lines, and meat works, since the animals wait there between the farm and wherever they go next. The Chicago stockyards were once world-famous and huge, so in American writing the word can carry a whole picture of noise, dust, and the meat trade. In Australia, stockyards on a farm are simply the working pens where you sort and load the cattle, part of ordinary farm life.
