    A stockman is a man whose job is looking after farm animals — cattle, sheep, horses. Here 'stock' means live animals ('livestock'), not goods in a shop, and that surprises people. The word is strongest in Australia and New Zealand, where a stockman rides out over big cattle stations and works the herd; it is a proud, tough, outdoor word there, close to what an American calls a cowboy. In Britain it is quieter and more everyday: the man on a farm who feeds the animals and watches their health. It sounds old-fashioned now in two ways. First, it says 'man', so farms and job ads often write 'stockperson' or 'stockhand' instead. Second, in America the same spelling can mean a worker who fills shelves in a shop or moves goods in a warehouse — that one uses the shop meaning of stock. Which meaning you get depends on where you are.

組成stock（這裡是 livestock，家畜）+ -man（做某工作的人）。stock 來自古英語 stocc「樹幹」，後來延伸出「一批存著的東西」，家畜也算農場「存著」的財產。-man 來自古英語 mann。
