A person whose job is making steel, working in the factory where iron is melted and turned into steel. It is hot, heavy, dangerous work, traditionally done by men in large groups, and the word carries all of that with it. Steelworkers appear in English mostly as a group rather than one by one: steelworkers went on strike, thousands of steelworkers lost their jobs, a steelworkers' union. Whole towns in Britain, America and Wales grew up around a single steelworks, and when the works closed the town emptied — so the word often arrives in a sentence about hard times, pride, and communities fighting to keep their work. It is an ordinary, respectful word with no formal or informal edge to it; a steelworker will call himself a steelworker. Keep it apart from steelmaker: the worker is the human being, the maker is the company that employs him.
