A dockworker is someone whose job is loading and ships. It is the transparent compound: a worker at the dock. In meaning it matches British docker; dockworker is easier to read and is the form many American speakers prefer. The work has changed with containers — fewer people, more machines — but the job name is the same. You may also meet in American English for the same kind of work. It is one word, not dock worker in careful writing, though you will see the two-word spelling too.
