A statutory holiday is a day off that the law gives you; a statutory limit is a limit the law fixes; statutory rights are rights you have because a law says so, whatever your boss or your contract says. The heart of the word is that the rule comes from a statute — a law passed by a lawmaking body — rather than from an agreement, a habit, or someone's decision. That contrast is often the whole reason a writer chooses it: "your statutory rights" quietly means "these ones nobody can take away from you". It is formal and legal, common in contracts, official letters, and shop notices in Britain ("this does not affect your statutory rights"). There is one very common fixed phrase you should know because it does not follow the pattern: "statutory rape" means sex with someone under the legal age, where the law treats it as a crime even if the young person said yes. The word there still means "as defined by law", but the phrase is a set term, and you should not build new phrases like it.
