In the United States, the building where the lawmakers of one state meet and work. Each of the fifty states has its own government with its own lawmakers, separate from the national government in Washington, D.C., and the statehouse is where that state's lawmakers sit — usually a large old building with a dome, in the state's capital city. So Ohio's statehouse is in Columbus, and Massachusetts's is in Boston. It is written both as one word, statehouse, and as two, state house, and the capital letter comes and goes; you will see all of these. Newspapers use it a lot, and often not about the building at all but about the state government as a whole: "a fight at the statehouse" means a political fight among those lawmakers, not people fighting in a corridor. Reporters who cover state politics are called statehouse reporters for the same reason. Note that this is an American word for an American thing. Other countries do not have statehouses, and a Taiwanese student will mostly meet the word in US news. Do not confuse it with the White House, which is where the US president lives, or with the Capitol in Washington, which is the national one.
