1. 1

`Stagecraft` is the practical skill of making theatre work — knowing how a play is built and how to put it in front of an audience. It covers two related things. For a writer, it is the sense of what plays well on a stage: where to end an act, when a character should walk in, how long an audience will sit still. A critic writing "the plot is thin but the stagecraft is superb" means the writer knows exactly how to hold a room. For a director or a theatre worker, it is the whole craft of the physical production — lighting, sound, scenery, how actors are moved around the space. It is an uncountable noun: you have stagecraft, you learn stagecraft, you do not have "a stagecraft" or "two stagecrafts". It sits in the same shelf of words as "craft" itself — something learned slowly by doing, not from a book. The word has spread beyond the theatre. Political writers use it for a politician's skill at managing how they appear in public — closely related to stage-manage, but rather more : stagecraft is a skill you credit someone with, while stage-managing is something you accuse them of.
