- 1
The quality of being sprightly: still moving quickly and easily, still full of life and energy — said above all about an old person, and said with warmth and admiration. When a writer says "her sprightliness surprised everyone", they mean she moves and talks like someone much younger, and they are pleased about it. The word carries both parts of the picture at once: the body still working well (walking fast, climbing , dancing) and the mind still bright (quick answers, jokes, interest in things). It can also describe music or writing that feels light and quick, though that use is rarer. It is the noun of sprightly, and like the adjective it is a formal, word — you will find it in , book reviews and older novels, hardly ever in speech. In everyday English people say "energy" or "she's still full of life". One warning about tone: because it is used almost only about old people, using it about someone young can sound like a small joke, as if you were surprised they could move at all.
(尤指老年人的)矍鑠、精神好、身手俐落
組成sprightly(有精神的)+ -ness(名詞字尾,表示「…的狀態」)。sprightly 又來自 spright,是 sprite(精靈)的舊拼法——所以字面感覺是「像精靈一樣輕快」。
